Un mot de Pearson:
"Mike Wieringo's tragic death really shook me up. More so than I thought it
should. Being the overly analytical guy that I am, I tried to understand my
reaction. It wasn't that he was relatively too young (44) to have a heart
attack nor was it that he had been a friend of fifteen years. It was
something else that I couldn't place my finger on.
I couldn't get my head into my regular work because I kept thinking about
Mike. Then this image popped into my head and before I knew it, I was up all
night drawing.
Mike's hand waving goodbye was the last element to be drawn. Not due to any
melodramatic symbolism but because when I pencil, I work left to right so I
don't smudge the pre-existing work. It was then, although, when I realized
what had been troubling me earlier.
Did Mike know, alone that fateful Sunday afternoon, that he would be missed?
As a friend and as a contributor to this silly ass industry, did he know
that his presence made a difference? All of us would like to believe that,
when it's our time, our efforts will substantiate our dreams. As
professionals, that we'll be appreciated by our fans but more importantly by
our peers. Unfortunately, Mike thought little of himself and less of his
artwork. He probably didn't know but it doesn't have to be that way anymore.
I've decided that I would start a 'Ringo tribute book, that would be ready
for next year's Heroes con. I've asked all professionals that knew Mike and
those that attend the con to contribute. The originals could then go up for
auction. All money, after expenses would go, in Mike's name, towards
whatever charity the Wieringo family would like.
I felt this would be a nice send off for a guy who will never be at the show
again but whose presence will always be felt. Also it would be a nice way
for the freelance community to show some unity and provide a precedent for
memorials like this in the future. I have Tim Townsend down to ink my piece.
A huge number of incredibly talented artists have responded and now it's
time to put it all together.
I will post updates about the book and create a list of all those that are
contributing at a later date.
Please save your money up and get in line for one of the best projects that
I've ever been a part of.
